"I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door that no man can shut; a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name." Revelation 3:8
To apply what we read in Part 1, we study the case of a man who closed the door. His name is Jeroboam and the biblical account is in 1 Kings 1 Kings 11:26 until 14:20.
Jeroboam was a mighty man that caught the attention of King Solomon that brought about all over the house of Joseph (1 Kings 11:28). But Jeroboam arose from some actions by the king (vs. 26, 27).
The relevant part for us is when Jeroboam has his encounter with the prophet Ahijah (vs. 29-39). The prophet declares the Word of God to Jeroboam saying: The Lord would divide the kingdom of Israel (12 Tribes compound) into two parts (10 + 2), and that would give him reign over the ten tribes. Still said the reason why this would happen: Because I left, and have worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the Ammonites, and have not walked in my ways, to do what is right in my eyes, namely, my statutes and my judgments, as did David his father (vs. 33).
The Lord said by the prophet Ahijah: And I will take thee, and reign over all that thy soul desireth, and thou shalt be king over Israel. And let it be, if you hear all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways and do what is right in my eyes by keeping my statutes and my commandments, as David did, my servant, I will be with you , and build thee a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel (vs. 37-38). reign over all that thy soul desireth was the port (through His Word) that God has opened for Jeroboam. But there was a condition be righteous like David and not make the mistakes of Solomon. David was not a perfect man, had its flaws, but faced with a sincere heart and led to repentance.
So far we have seen that the Lord has opened a door before Jeroboam.
Jeroboam reigned over the 10 tribes of the Lord God had spoken. However, seeing all the people, as God commanded in the law, down to Jerusalem to worship and sacrifice, he was afraid. And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David. If this people go up to do sacrifice in house of the LORD in Jerusalem, the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and said to them too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of Egypt. And he set one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan And this thing became a sin: for the people went as far as Dan to worship the calf. (I Kings 12:26-30)
quando deu início à idolatria e creditou a eles a libertação de Israel do Egito. Afraid of losing the people, gave way to despair and did not keep the word of God said to reign over all that thy soul desireth, and thou shalt be king over Israel. And he denied the Lord's name when he began to idolatry and credited them the deliverance of Israel from Egypt.
We see here Jeroboam closing the door that God opened to him. The Lord decrees: Go, tell Jeroboam, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel: Because you have raised from among the people, and made thee prince over my people Israel, and tore the kingdom from the house of David, and gave thee, and thou hast not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments and who followed me with all your heart, doing only what was right in my eyes, before you have done evil, worse than all that were before thee: and thou wast, and made thee other gods and molten images, to provoke me to anger, and cast me behind thy back, therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, destroy all of Jeroboam man to the boy, both slave and free in Israel, and cast out the descendants of the house of Jeroboam, as taketh away dung, until it is all gone. (I Kings 14:7-10)
